چکیده

4 Beta-adrenergic blocking agents or β-blockers are prescribed for the treatment of a broad array of common disorders. Their widespread use, coupled with a narrow therapeutic index, contributes to their being a significant cause of poisoning from overdose and the second most common cause of mortality from cardiovascular agents. This article provides an overview of beta-adrenergic system pathophysiology and the properties and pharmacokinetics of β-blockers. Also discussed are the various effects and management of βblockers in overdose settings. Clin Ped Emerg Med 9:4-16 C 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc.

A Clinico-Epidemiological Study on Poisonings due to Cardiovascular Drugs in Ahvaz, Iran

Background: Overdoses with cardiovascular drugs are related with significant morbidity and mortality. Beta-adrenergic blockers, calcium-channel blockers (CCBs), thiazide, digoxin and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors represent five of the most important classes of cardiovascular drugs. Overdoses with cardiovascular drugs are typically caused by exploratory ingestion by children or ...

Hyperinsulinemic Euglycemia and Intravenous Lipid Emulsion Treatments for Calcium Channel Blocker and Beta Blocker Poisoning: A Report of Two Cases

Poisoning with calcium channel blockers and beta blockers are associated with high mortality and morbidity rates, especially in children. Treatment of poisoning with these drugs includes administration of atropine, glucagon, calcium and inotropic agents as clinically needed; and newer approaches like hyperinsulinemic euglycemia and intravenous lipid emulsion therapies. We herein present two ref...

Beta-Blocker Overdose Treated with Extended Duration High Dose Insulin Therapy

Poisoning and overdose of beta-blockers may be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Management is often complicated by failure of initial first-line interventions in severe ingestions. High-dose insulin, or hyperinsulinemia/euglycemia therapy has been well described in calcium channel blocker overdose as well as mixed ingestions of calcium channeland betablocker agents. The data...

Costs and persistence of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor versus alpha-2 agonists, associated with beta-blockers, in glaucoma and ocular hypertension: an analysis of the UK-GPRD database.

OBJECTIVE To compare the effectiveness and associated costs of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors + beta-blocker versus alpha-2 adrenergic agonists + beta-blocker in glaucoma therapy, as documented by The United Kingdom General Practitioner Research Database (UK-GPRD). RESEARCH DESIGN Patient chart analysis. METHODS Patient records were screened for diagnoses of ocular hypertension or glaucoma, ...

Calcium channel antagonist and beta-blocker overdose: antidotes and adjunct therapies.

Management of cardiovascular instability resulting from calcium channel antagonist (CCB) or beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist (BB) poisoning follows similar principles. Significant myocardial depression, bradycardia and hypotension result in both cases. CCBs can also produce vasodilatory shock. Additionally, CCBs, such as verapamil and diltiazem, are commonly ingested in sustained-release for...
